What a cookie is

A cookie is a small piece of text a site asks your browser to keep and send back on your next request. It is how a website recognises the same browser twice, which is what lets you stay signed in across pages instead of proving who you are on every click. Some of what we keep on your device is not a cookie at all but browser storage, and that is listed below too, because it is the same question.

Cookies we set

These are first-party: they are set by cleverchecker.com and are readable only by it. All three are strictly necessary, meaning the site cannot do what you asked without them.

• session is the one the site runs on. It is signed, so it cannot be edited in the browser, and it carries your sign-in state, the currency your prices are shown in, your subscription once you have bought, the fact that you have passed the abuse check, and where you first arrived from (the campaign or referrer on your first page). It expires when you close the browser.
• cc_country holds the country you chose in your profile, so the flag beside English and the English variant the grammar checker defaults to follow you. It lasts one year and is set only when you save a country.
• cc_last_id remembers the address, name and sign-in method you used last, so the login page can offer you the right button instead of a blank form. It lasts 180 days and is not a credential: it cannot sign anyone in, and the session above is what actually authenticates you.

Browser storage

Browser storage stays on your machine and is never sent to us. The tools keep a draft of the text in the box and the options you last picked there, so a reload or a mistap does not lose your work, and the home page records that you dismissed its cookie notice so it does not come back. Clearing your browser's site data removes all of it.

Security and network

The site is served through Cloudflare, which sets its own cookies at the network edge to tell automated traffic from people and to remember that a challenge has been passed. The same applies to the anti-abuse widget on the input box. We do not read these cookies and they carry nothing you submitted.

Measurement cookies

We run ads, and we measure which of them lead to a sale. These are set by Google rather than by us, and they are read by those providers:

• Google Analytics and Google Ads set cookies beginning _ga and _gcl to count a visit as one visit and to match a sale back to the ad that was clicked. Up to two years.

The text you submit is never in any of them, and it is never shared with these providers.

The browser extension

Our extension signs in with the same cleverchecker.com session cookie described above and sets none of its own. What it keeps on your device, and what it does and does not read from the pages you visit, is set out in the Privacy Policy.

Controlling cookies

Every browser lets you see, block and delete cookies, usually under Settings then Privacy, and you can clear this site's data without touching any other. Two things worth knowing before you do: blocking the session cookie signs you out and stops checkout working, since the site has no other way to know the payment page and the card belong to the same person; and clearing storage discards any draft still in a tool. Measurement cookies, where they are set, can be blocked without affecting anything the site does for you.
